Millicent Martin(I)

The daughter of a master builder, Millicent was aged twelve when she enrolled in the Italia Conti Stage School, where her fellow pupils included Anthony Newley and Johnny Briggs. At sixteen, she was an £8 a week chorus girl in Blue For a Boy and became one of the highest paid ITV song and dance girls. She later appeared in the chorus of The Magic Flute at Covent Garden in 1948 and toured America in The Boy Friend from 1954 to '57, then, in 1958, was in Expresso Bongo in London. Subsequent shows included Our Man Crichton in 1964 and Peter Pan in 1967. She made her film debut in 1960, her films including Alfie and Stop the World I Want ti Get Off. She joined the television show That Was The Week That Was in 1963 and was in it for about one-and-a-half years, which led to her own show Mainly Millicent. She was voted Television's Light Entertainment Personality of the Year in 1964. That year, she was in the film Nothing But The Best. Later, she received two Tony Award nominations for work on Broadway: Side by Side by Sondheim (1977) and King of Hearts (1978).She married singer Ronnie Carroll in 1959; they divorced in 1965. She then married actor Norman Eshley in 1969, divorcing in 1973. Her third marriage was to Marc Alexander in 1978.
