Kit Guard was born Christen Klitgaard May 5, 1894 in Hals, Denmark. His parents, Jens and Thyra Klitgaard, were farmers and he had four bothers. The family immigrated to Canada in 1901 and later moved to San Francisco, California. He became an American citizen and went to New York City where he worked as a blacksmith.
