Shinji Aoyama(1964-2022)

A director known for the thematic and visual bleakness of his work, Aoyama often sets his films in the Kyushu region from which he hails. He graduated from Rikkyo University and became known in 1996, but it was Eureka in 2000, which won him prizes at the Cannes Film Festival. Aoyama would continue in film, but also write novels, contribute to magazines and become a film professor at Tama Art University. Aoyama married actress Maho Toyota and has cast her in his films.
