Leonard Cohen was a Canadian singer-songwriter, poet and novelist whose deeply introspective work explored faith, love, mortality, politics, desire and spiritual longing. Raised in Montreal in a Jewish family with roots in Lithuania and Poland, he first emerged during the 1950s and 1960s as a respected literary voice through poetry collections and novels including "Let Us Compare Mythologies", "The Favourite Game" and "Beautiful Losers", before turning to music in the mid-1960s. After moving to the United States, he gained recognition with songs such as "Suzanne", recorded by Judy Collins, and soon established himself as one of the defining singer-songwriters of his generation with acclaimed albums including "Songs of Leonard Cohen", "Songs from a Room", "Songs of Love and Hate", "Various Positions", "I'm Your Man" and "The Future". His song "Hallelujah" gradually became one of the most widely performed and celebrated compositions in modern music. Cohen's work combined literary precision with sparse, emotionally charged songwriting, while his gravelly voice and understated performances became instantly recognizable worldwide. Over the decades he collaborated with artists including Jennifer Warnes, Sharon Robinson and Phil Spector, and his music evolved from acoustic folk into more electronic and jazz-influenced arrangements. Following a period of retreat at a Zen Buddhist monastery in California during the 1990s, he returned with a late-career resurgence through albums such as "Ten New Songs", "Old Ideas", "Popular Problems" and "You Want It Darker". Financial losses caused by his former manager led him back to extensive international touring between 2008 and 2013, introducing his music to a new generation and reaffirming his reputation as a powerful live performer. Widely regarded as one of the greatest lyricists in popular music, Cohen was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, while also receiving numerous literary and cultural honors during his lifetime.
